We had a great day out at Hollowell Steam rally. It was our first time but the event is now in its 25th year and has raised over £1m for charity to date. The engines and horses are definitely the main attractions but there were plenty of stalls and other exhibits to browse around.

High End, New inn is a mediaeval manor hall acquired by the Landmark Trust in the early 1970s. One of more than twenty listed buildings in the village of Peasenhall, the property is now divided into three separate self catering apartments with shared access to the central hall.

We felt ourselves drawn back to the relaxed pace of life since our earlier trip to nearby Yoxford in 2009. Perhaps the biggest appeal is the sense of calm isolation that comes when you remove all phones, televisions and accompaniments to a modern lifestyle. Not least the invasive ones like Tesco, police sirens and Twitter.

"Staying Cool" in the Snow

Have just spent a couple of nights away in Birmingham to celebrate our anniversary. Accommodation was tall and round in the shape of the Rotunda where we stayed on the top floor. Staying Cool offer various self catering apartments for rent and the location could not have been more perfect for our needs.

Spent Friday wandering around the Jewellery Quarter and doing some Christmas Shopping around the Bull Ring and Christmas Market. In the evening we went to see Chris Addison do stand up at the 'Alex'andra Theatre: very funny, satirical whimsy, but surprisingly cold in the stalls. Seeing the audience hunched in hats and coats prompted his idea of carol singers gathering for mince pies before heading out on the town. Perhaps they should have sold hot chocolate in the interval rather than ice cream!

Had a pleasant day exploring the NEC at the Grand Designs Show. Clearly you are no-one if you haven't yet installed fully retracting fold-out patio doors, but for those who are more concerned with saving the planet, there was plenty of suppliers promoting the Government Feed in Tariff scheme.

For those who invest in the appropriate technology (usually solar photo voltaic panels) an application can be made to subscribe to FITS. Not only will your regular energy supplier be obliged to pay for all the electricity you generate (whether you use it or not), but you can use whatever you generate for free and even sell back any excess that you don't. Obviously solar is less effective at night so there is still a need to buy energy in the regular fashion, but the savings and return on investment can reach 10% rather than virtually nothing with your money in a bank.

Whilst not as big as Coventry Transport Museum this permanent exhibition at Gaydon has many distinctive and unique motor cars. Astons, Rovers and various other British marques feature highly but this can easily be forgiven. I particularly liked the Tracked Land Rover Cuthbertson conversion and the Alec Issigonis Lightweight Special Race Car.

It's 2 years since I ventured down to Silverstone to see GT Cars swimming around in the fog.

This year the weekend tickets for £26 each allowed us to stop for Friday practice on the way back from Cornwall. Although generally sunnier and drier, the cold wind still meant it was a bracing experience.

Both Saturday qualifying and Sunday Race day afforded us some close up views of some exciting racing. The whole event was much bigger than before but still nothing like the same scale as F1 or even the Touring Car Championship. If you like cars and noise it's to be recommended!

Cornwall

Our first experience with The Landmark Trust was very pleasant. The hamlet of Coombe, just north of Bude in Cornwall is owned by the Trust and most of the buildings have been renovated to provide self catering accommodation.

Mill House dates from around 1700 and so the lack of modern distractions such as TV, Phones and Internet should be no surprise. However, all other facilities and the idyllic setting more than make up for this. There are plenty of walks and just down the lane is Duckpool, a rocky cove that looks west over the Atlantic.

Our stay allowed us the chance to visit the Eden Project once more and discover what had been added since we first went in 2000 and later in 2002. Most notable is The Core, which features The Seed sculpture by Peter Randall-Page and plenty of information on environmental matters.

Also, we took a trip to Ilfracome and explored rock pools around the Tunnels Beaches as well as excursions to Arlington Court, Okehampton Castle and Lydford Gorge, before heading home via Silverstone.

Grrr. Barely 2 weeks after repairing a tyre damaged after hitting a pothole it's gone and happened again.

According to Warwickshire Council, a hole this big anywhere in the road is classed as large. It only needs to be half this deep if it's in the wheel track. As far as my car is concerned when it hits the equivalent of an immovable wall at 40 miles per hour something is going to give (and it isn't the immovable wall)
I will be pursuing the people responsible...

Instead of doing nothing during our well-earned break, we decided instead to dash round the country trying to cram in as much as possible. Too much in fact because I'm still convinced we were going to spend another night with Jon and Hetty and that someone stole a day between Thursday and Saturday.

Anyway, we had a nice time catching up with friends and then being tourists in and around central London. On Wednesday we dashed to the B&B before heading back for a turn on the London Eye. This gave us the afternoon to explore Westminster and surroundings before crossing the river to see A Christmas Carol in 3D at the IMAX cinema.

Thursday was spent strolling from Westminster through Knightsbridge towards the Natural History Museum where we spent a couple of hours exploring the new Darwin Centre. This was then followed by a trip to the British Museum where we got to see some of the objects from Staffordshire Hoard before hearing a lecture by Dr. Kevin Leahy about how this incredible treasure trove was found and how it is set to further our knowledge of Anglo-Saxon history.

Does anyone understand tyres (or even tires)? Not even the man in ATS Euromaster who couldn't ably differentiate a run flat (RFT) from an asymmetrical directional tread pattern even when the car was standing in front of him.

Replacing like-for-like would be simple solution however the manufacturers are trying so hard to engineer obsolescent products that the chances of having four the same are virtually nil.

To cut a long story short, I now have a suitably at'tire'd car with 4 strips of rubber round the circular metal things and a certificate of road worthiness that is technically worthless assuming the man remembers to punch the right keys on the VOSA Database. Huzzah!

With true British determination, we joined forces with hundreds of other picnickers at Stanford Hall before settling back to enjoy the fireworks competition. Once again, Pyromania put on the best display but the image above is from the finale, by organisers, MLE.
The weather cleared not long after we arrived and aside from a nasty accident involving a girl and a cattle grid, a fun time was had by all.

After at least 2 years of saying it would be a good idea, Guillaume and I finally managed to summon enough energy to actually get up and go play tennis. Twice in one week actually. After a [wet] false start that took us to the indoor courts at Warwick Uni we decided to wait for a dry day, and took advantage of the very good municipal courts.
Whilst the knowledge of how to play has deserted neither of us, it will be a long journey to rediscover the pinnacle of physical excellence we used to inhabit.

With a few clicks and a couple of phone calls I managed to find a fantastic place to stay in Yoxford, Suffolk. The owners, David and Jackum Brown moved into the Old Methodist Chapel about twelve years ago after leaving London. (They have recently started found themselves back on the publishing bandwagon with their "501 must see" guide books.) Needless to say we were delighted with the accomodation and hospitality they showed us.
I found Suffolk surprising in many ways: The countryside is expansive and yet varied; the villages are beautiful but not too quaint; the pace of life is unhurried but does not feel backward.
It was refreshing to find a part of the world not too eager to rush forward with progress but rather choose the best bits once someone else has tested the water. We did not see one Tescos (or other major high street chain come to think of it) and felt all the better because of it!
As usual, our budget break included an assortment of National Trust and English Heritage sites including Wimpole Hall, Sutton Hoo, Orford Castle, Framlingham Castle, and Ickford Rotunda.

We visited the Doctor Who exhibition at the Transport Museum on Saturday. All in all it was worth the trip and a great chance to see the props and costumes up close and in detail. Aside from the obvious delights of Cybermen and Daleks I particularly like the Sycorax and the displays that showed how to creat an Ood.

Thursday was overcast and drizzling so we stuck to the local National Trust properties. These included Townend house, The Beatrix Potter Gallery and her home at Hill Top. After a quick foray into Ulverstone and a hike up Hoad Hill we headed back to Bowness for grub at Jackson's Bistro. Friday was our last day and I was determined to walk off at least some of the food we'd scoffed. With OS map in hand we followed a dozen or so pensioners out of Grasmere and lumbered up the hill to Easedale Tarn. Once up top we fended off ducks and gulls to eat our lunch before trundling back down (with most of our dignity intact) and headed home.

On Wednesday we headed North to Keswick and visited the Cumberland Pencil Museum. This was an unexpected treat for me and included a chance to see the largest pencil in the world ~ mmmmm, pencil heaven. After this exciting start to the day we stepped it up a gear and headed into the national park. Following a brief introductory course we were soon swinging through the trees like orangutans at Go Ape (great fun!) Finally we headed west to Castlerigg Stone Circle and then back to Windermere for a curry.

Tuesday was a little overcast so after picking up leaflets at the Tourist Information we headed to Blackwell, an arts & crafts house built around the turn of the century. As well as an impressive architectural creation in its own right, the property has a small collection of ceramics and art from the same period. In fact we decided to acquire a smallish piece to take home in the shape of a vessel by James Hake. Since the weather brightened we headed for a walk up Brant Fell, overlooking Lake Windermere before then heading out to Troutbeck for another pub meal at The Queen's Head.

Our holiday started with a leisurely drive North, stopping briefly at Dunham Massey (NT), just outside Manchester. The weather was so glorious that by the time we arrived at Windermere I think the squinting into bright sunlight had given us both a headache. After a cup of tea at our B&B - Gillthwaite Rigg - and quick excursion through Bowness we ended up at the Mason's Arms for a very nice pub meal.

For all the crossed fingers and wistful looks at leaden skies the snow never really came. The fact that it only snowed 3 or 4 inches however seemed to make no difference: The mere idea of snow is capable of bringing the country to a standstill.
Schools closed...Airports closed...Buses cancelled...Trains cancelled...
Perhaps it'll be better next time. Following 1976 and 1990 it seems we have perhaps another one and a half decades to prepare for the worst.

Gun Wielding Cow on Bunny Hunt

Paul Coppen, 69, was struggling to keep an army of rabbits from stripping his pastures bare. So in an attempt to gain the upper hand, he camouflaged his vintage Massy Ferguson tractor as a cow - complete with a firing platform and a gunslit from which to blast the unwary bunnies.

He said: "One of my neighbours came up with the idea and I just went with it. I hoped the rabbits would ignore the fake cow, thinking it was just another member of the herd, thereby presenting a stationary target for the rifleman as I drive about the farm."

A driver-cum-rifleman was cunningly camouflaged behind a picture of a tree above the cow. "It has to be said that not all rabbits are entirely fooled. Whereas cattle obviously do move around, trees usually don't and that may be a problem. I won't pretend this device is going to be the be all and end all of rabbit control - but it does seem to startle them somewhat and stops them from scampering away too quickly, which give us a chance to have a shot at them."

A Stay In Hay

Took a trip to Hay on Wye recently to celebrate our anniversary. We were the only guests in The Old Post Office B&B in Llanigon which despite it being a little chilly was up to the usual Sawday standard.
Hay is quite a pretty town but seemed cold in a number of ways. The shop keepers generally seemed friendly to each other but we never really seemed to generate a warm welcome. Still, the book shops kept us amused for quite a few hours and the drive round the black mountains was pleasant enough.
Oh, and whilst the loan car from Listers made it all possible it was nice to get home and swap a dirty white A3 for a clean black one - complete with new radiator.

We had a lovely time staying with Keir and Louise Lusby (yet another Sawday selection) at Whitehouse Farm Cottage. The pair also run a studio in Shepperton which designs and fabricates props for film and TV so it was quite exciting to share the breakfast table with stories and examples of their work.
On Sunday we caught up with Helen and Benny who were the perfect hosts. After lunch we took a whistlestop tour across Smith's Lawn, stopped briefly at the new Savill Gardens visitor centre and were treated to a river cruise before checking out the ancient oaks near Cranbourne, the polo stables at Flemish Farm and back to their cottage for a lovely dinner!
On Tuesday we took an excursion to the somewhat disappointing Brooklands Museum and the impressive RHS Gardens at Wisley. Finally, our break was wrapped up with a trip into London on Wednesday to the V&A.

We arrived early - thanks for the tip Karen - and enjoyed a picnic/feast before the three competing teams put on a 10 minute display each. Sunday was less frenetic as we met up with my parents on Indulgence near Hartshill. After a pub lunch, Carys took the tiller for a short while before we all parted company at Atherstone

We were able to check some more castles off the list as well as a long overdue catch-up with Mark & his family in Allandale. Go-Ape was a great experience and one that I plan to repeat locally (although the 426m zip line is one of a kind in the UK and only found at Aberfoyle)

Spent a couple of days away in Derbyshire and managed to get away from it all. As is our custom we opted to make the most of EH and NT. Definitely preferring the English Heritage lot as the Trust often comes across as being a little snooty about how you should enjoy their property.

Finished the Tamiya 1/10 scale RC Buggy I bought earlier in the month. I'm quite pleased with how it all came together and the final chrome look is certainly eye-catching.

Although foggy and damp the day was well worth it. Lots of action as the drivers struggled to cope with a cold track. The main event was probably the most exciting with the final places only decided on the penultimate lap as the Jet Alliance DBR9 and Vitaphone MC12 finally found a way past the UK based GigaWave team on their first outing with the Aston DBR9.

Tuesday night was the night of "The Big One": The largest quake since 1984 - although we should never forget Dudley '02 and the devastation that brought. The limited damage was felt over an enormous area and some West Midland villages are only just beginning to deal with their wobbly chimblies. It is hoped that most roads be open again by Monday and that patio furniture be restored to its natural state in the coming week.

Three security guards arrested after they were found in possession of a dead rabbit in Mpumalanga appeared in court on Friday on charges of being in possession of a dead animal.

They were not asked to plead and were released on a warning – pending their next appearance in the Komatipoort periodical court on March 12 .

Moses Thwala, 31, Ernest Mbebe, 32, and Bongane Shongwe, 23, were arrested last Thursday after they allegedly picked up a dead rabbit at the Marloth Park community game reserve.

“I don’t know why we were arrested. We didn’t kill that rabbit; we found it dead after it was knocked down by a car,” said Thwala.

An Mpumalanga Parks Board spokesman said: “We arrested them in terms of an act that forbids people from picking up dead animals in the park.”
