Hare Scare

A crazed hare had to be pistol-whipped to death by police officers in northern Austria after it attacked a retired couple, said a police spokesperson on Monday. The hare attacked a woman, aged 74, while she was hanging washing in her garden at home in Linz, before turning on her husband who had come to help.
The animal then attacked two police officers, who had been called as backup and were "left with no choice but to use their handguns," said police spokesperson Alexander Niederwimmer.
The elderly woman, who was bitten in the foot, had to be hospitalised and the hare's body was being analysed to see if the animal was rabid.
It has been suggested that the hare's extraordinary behaviour might be "linked to puberty and exacerbated by the hot weather", which has been above average for this time of year in Austria
